Amazing Grace was written by John Newton (1725–1807), an English Anglican clergyman. The melody most commonly associated with it today, known as “New Britain,” is an American folk tune that first appeared in print in 1835 in William Walker’s Southern Harmony. It wasn’t until later that Newton’s lyrics were firmly paired with the “New Britain” melody, creating the enduring version we recognize today.
